There was a medieval legend which arose, that Jesus had accompanied His uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy tin merchant to the tin mines in Cornwall, England while He was still a boy. This is known as The Glastonbury Legend. A poem entitled, Jerusalem, alluding to this legend, written by William Blake, was later set to music and is known as The Glastonbury Hymn. It is the second stanza which inspired this lamp.

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear!
O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire ! . . .
