Sculptural Lighting & Functional Art

by Eric Hultquist

Eric Hultquist works at the intersection of sculptural design and architecture. His handcrafted light sculptures are one-of-a-kind functional art works which masquerade as lamps and furniture. These collectable lighting objects exist at the intersection of design, sculpture, art, and architecture, both  illuminating space and sparking conversation.

Eric Hultquist creates functional sculptures which display light as an integral structural element rather than lamps, that are simply decorative accessories. Working primarily in metal, Hultquist develops forms that emphasize equilibrium, asymmetry, and visual rhythm. Structural elements often appear to float or counterbalance creating a sense of suspended motion. Each lamp is designed to convey meaning through theme, symbol and stylistic innovation. These works often have platen-style shades formed from steel rod which depict a defining  pictorial outline. Select areas are then covered in fabric. Each lamp depicts a variety of imagery and themes. Every work is individually fabricated by hand resulting in collectible pieces that exist at the intersection of art and design.

Functional Sculpture Using Light

Hultquist approaches lighting from the standpoint of sculptural narrative rather than decorative object. Interactive aspects of form, style, and proportion inform each composition. While each structured construction displays light, the light is ancillary to the design aspect of the sculpture. The works draw stylistic elements from modernist sculpture and linear construction of architectural elements. Finished works display commercial excellence but remain deeply rooted in the tradition of hand fabrication. Welds, bends and structural arrangement remain visible since much of the work is presented using sketched outlines "drawn" with steel rod in 3-dimensional space.

Each piece functions simultaneously as illumination and autonomous artwork – intended for collectors, designers and architectural interiors seeking objects having presence rather than simply as ornament.

Objects That Inspire Conversation

Hultquist’s lighted sculptures integrate illumination as a sculptural component rather than an afterthought by illuminating the surrounding space in a way that intentionally provokes engagement. Each work is conceived as a visual interruption that draws attention, inviting pause, curiosity and dialogue.

Rather than receding into a background as a display of conventional decorative lighting, each piece asserts a presence that intrigues viewers encouraging them to ask questions and make statements about symbol, theme, style, and how light interacts with and defines form. This moment of inquiry becomes part of the work itself.

In residential and architectural environments, the sculptures frequently become natural gathering points that initiate conversation and shared attention. The work therefore functions socially as well as visually, transforming lighting into an experienced phenomenon that connects people through observation and discovery.

Handcrafting Process

All works are fabricated by the artist using traditional metalworking techniques. Materials are shaped through cutting, welding, and forming processes that forego repetition and mass production. These individually handcrafted constructions transform industrial metal into refined poetic objects

Because each lamp is individually constructed, subtle variations emerge which reinforce the uniqueness of each piece. The result is lighting that carries the physical trace of its making – objects defined as much by their process of craftsmanship as by their form.

Combining precision fabrication with intuitive composition merges engineering logic with artistic improvisation re-enforcing the status of each piece as a collectible sculpture, challenging the traditional boundary between fine art and functional object

Collectible Design Objects

Hultquist’s lamps are conceived as collectible works of design intended for residential design-forward interiors, gallery, and architectural settings. Positioned between art furniture and contemporary sculpture, these pieces function as focal elements within an interior environment shaping atmosphere and ambiance through form and light.

Collectors and Designers are able to integrate these works as sculptural anchors – objects that engage equally, whether in daylight as sculptural compositions or at night by providing a luminous environment.
